Sagrada Familia
The Expiatory Temple of the Sagrada Familia, commonly known as the Sagrada Familia, is an iconic Catholic basilica located in Barcelona, Spain. Designed by the renowned architect Antoni Gaudí, its construction began in 1882, and despite the time that has passed, it remains unfinished. This masterpiece by Gaudí is the pinnacle of Catalan modernist architecture and has become the most visited monument in Spain, as well as the most visited church in Europe after St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. Once completed, it will become the tallest Christian church in the world.
The Sagrada Familia reflects Gaudí’s artistic brilliance, as he devoted much of his professional career to this project, especially during his later years. In this phase, Gaudí reached the peak of his naturalist style, achieving a synthesis of various architectural solutions and styles he had previously explored. His work on the Sagrada Familia achieves a perfect harmony between structural and decorative elements, combining plasticity and aesthetics, function and form, content and container. Gaudí managed to integrate all the arts into a coherent and logical structure, creating a work that is both monumental and profoundly symbolic.
